In an app on your Mac, choose Edit Emoji & Symbols, or press Control-Command-Space to open the Character Viewer. Thus if you are typing in Portuguese it’s important to know how to add accents and other diacritics when necessary.
The process of typing accents on a computer used to be somewhat inconvenient, with key combinations required to apply the desired accent. Windows even used to make users type in numerical combinations if they wanted to apply an accent. Since then things have gotten easier, and macOS is especially friendly when it comes to typing accents.
In order to type a Portuguese accent in macOS, simply hold down the letter on the keyboard that you wish to accent, and a menu will appear with the different accents available to use on that letter:
Now either press the number on your keyboard that corresponds with the accent you would like to add, or click the accent with the mouse. The accent will then apply to the letter like so:
When it comes to special characters such quotation marks you’ll still need to use keyboard combinations, which are as follows:

And if you have an older version of macOS or you simply would prefer using the keyboard combos for the accents, you can type them as follows:
- Acute Accent ( é ): Press “e” while holding the “option” key, release both keys then press “e” again.
- Grave Accent ( à, è, ù ): Press ” ` ” while holding down the “option” key, then press either “a”, “e” or “u” to insert a Grave accent above the appropriate letter.
- Cedilla ( ç ): Press “c” while holding down the “option” key.
- Circumflex ( â, ê, î, ô, ü ): Press “i” while holding down “option”, then press either “a”, “e”, “i”, “o” or “u”.
- Tilde (ã, ñ, õ): Press “n” while holding down “option”, then press either “a”, “n” or “o”.
